Although it is reported that Apple's self-developed 5G baseband chip has failed, it is not because of technical failures, but to technically violates Qualcomm's patents. Even if the patent cannot be bypassed, you can choose to pay a certain patent license fee to obtain Qualcomm's patent license.

According to the latest forecast of analysts, Qualcomm is likely to be an Apple modem supplier in the next few years, implying that Apple's self -developed baseband chip will not appear until 2025, and the iPhone 15 and 16 series will continue to use Qualcomm chip.

All four models of the iPhone 15 series launched in 2023 will be equipped with the latest Snapdragon X70 modem announced by Qualcomm in February. Like the Snapdragon X65 modem in the iPhone 14 series, the X70 theoretically supports the download speed of up to 10Gbps, while reducing power consumption requirements and adding artificial intelligence capabilities to improve the average speed.

The Wall Street Journal believes that Apple has no suspense to develop its own baseband chip, but it is only a matter of time. According to media reports，Haitong International Securities Analyst Jeff Pu said in a research report on Friday that he expects the iPhone 16 models released in 2024 to use the Snapdragon X75 modem that Qualcomm has not released. Like the Snapdragon X70, the X75 is expected to be based on TSMC's 4nm process technology, which helps improve the efficiency of power.

For Apple, the purchase of 5G chips from the external supplier and the use of self -developed 5G baseband chips can further reduce the cost of iPhone's material and make it better compatible with its own devices. Although Apple said that its independently developed 5G modem may be used in the iPhone as early as 2023, the ultimate transition takes at least a few years to succeed.
